maeda-fucious say...

yes, there is a reason i loved studying with my graduate school advisor.

and now i have stumbled upon his blog. i want to share his wisdom with you. and i quote this stuff directly -- as his blog is certainly the closet portal to his mind we've ever/will ever see.

i recommend reading his posts surrounding each one, for context. the posts are linked below.

oh and thefoo will be turning all of this into fortune cookies as i blog them. yum!

maeda's 1st law of simplicity:

A complex system of many functions can be
simplified by carefully grouping related functions.

maeda's 2nd law of simplicity:

The positive emotional response derived
from a simplicity experience has less to do
with utility, and more to do with saving time
.

maeda's 3rd law of simplicity
(hereby entitle the "Add Whipped Cream and Cherries" approach):

When the richness of an experience
is increased in a manner that facilitates
the perception of the overall intent,
by all means don't skimp. Add more!

maeda's 4th law of simplicity:

The more you know about something beforehand,
the simpler it will ultimately be perceived.

maeda's 5th law of simplicity:

A material's failure to comply to a specific application
provides indication that its more natural usage lies elsewhere.

maeda's 6th law of simplicity:

In order to "feel," you gotta have noise.
Too much noise, and all you've got is noise.

maeda's 7th law of simplicity:

The more care, attention, and effort applied
to that which is less, the more it shall be perceived
as more than it really is.

maeda's 8th law of simplicity:

Recognize not only the absolute laws of
the physical universe as important constraints,
but also the artificial laws as of equal importance
when striving for simplicity.

apparently he will blog-no-more when he reaches 16. alas. good things never last.

naw'lins

conor & i went to new orleans over the weekend, for jazz fest... & had a great time! we saw elvis costello & the los lonely boys. we heard aaron neville sing gospel on sunday morning. the weekend closed with a rockin' performance by the neville brothers... and there were lots of other big names and great local bands.

who knew you could make such cool sounds with a washboard, a spoon, and an accordian?

the weather was (mostly) awesome, and the food was definitely awesome. i now understand why new orleans is the fattest city in the US.

do they know what a fresh vegetable is? i think not.

but man that seafood gumbo is good stuff!...
