two great things to check out

okay i'm going to try and compile my daily dose of external-links-to-other-sites-of-things-i-find-funny down into one post per day. no more running stream of post after post after post of random crap. here's the new recipe: one thought-provoking and insightful prose written originally by megan post, and one cheap thrills filled with links elsewhere post. sound good?

base

i want to use a new word that i was reminded of today while scanning my brother's friend's blog: dastardly!

it has this flair that makes me really excited when i read/hear it!

well, it did... until i double-checked the meaning (i don't want to misuse).

dictionary.com taught me that no, it does not mean "devious, coniving, and unmistakably brilliant in a bastardly way", like i'd hoped.

oh. no.

rather, "cowardly and malicious" was the correct definition. pathetic. how am i supposed to use that!?!

"last night at poker, I dastardly raised the bet to $50 to scare chris into folding." lies, all lies... i'm no dastardly person! i'm only malicious when i'm anything BUT cowardly! when i'm cowardly, i'm anything BUT malicious! i run like a scared puppy with my tail between my legs. sigh.

guess i don't get to use my fun, new word.

unless... unless bush is dastardly in tonight's debate! ooo! yeah! bring it!

poker! (in the ribs)

today, i learned how to play texas hold 'em. on my computer. it was very important that i learn, because it looks like some co-workers of mine are meeting up for a round, tonight after work. at work. but after work. if that makes any sense.

should i join them? and see if this whole "beginners luck" thing has some merit? i'm pretty freakin' awful at poker.

for one thing, i'm too cheap for anything that requires money upfront.

for another thing...

um, well. there isn't really another thing. huh.

i wonder if i can weasel a few bucks outta somebody, to foot my entry... i'm much better and playing the innocent damsel in distress.

interesting thought.

or, i could go to the gym. that's always a fun time.
lets see.
eat food, play poker...
go to gym.
eat food, play poker...
go to gym.

i'm not getting anywhere! someone help!

swish

if i can feel, in my office, a magnitude ~6.0 earthquake that hit central california about 150 miles away, i have to ask myself... what is it going to feel like if it ever hits san francisco at that magnitude? hmm. well. i don't think i want to find out! but i bet it's on the order of being hit by four hurricanes. okay, maybe just one... with a lot less water & wind.

squirrel captain & his military for hire

its a coldish and foggy day again in san francisco.

sigh.

oh well... nothing a warm pair of fleece pants can't fix. i'm listening to NPR right now, while my roommate & matt play scrabble. it's a semi-cozy feeling. i just cleaned the bathroom, which wasn't cozy at all, but is satisfying in its own right... before that, conor & i had a great little breakfast at howard's diner, then went for a jaunt around the very cool arboretum in the park, at 9th. innocent enough, right? yes, until we were attacked by squirrels! they surrounded us! ran straight at us! stood on hind legs in fighting stance! we screamed, and ran for our lives!

aaaaah!

ok. i'm exaggerating a little bit, but they really WERE aggresive. they did run at right towards my bare toes (always in flip flops). and another one did assume fighting stance... the little dude stood up on his hind legs and stuck out his arms... and for a brief moment, deep down, somewhere, maybe, perhaps, we were scared.

or not.
it was hilarious.
someday, i hope to see a herd of squirrels in military formation, tromping through the arboretum. that would rock.

it's been there for two days. and, as my co-worker so eloquently put it...

"i'm sure it could never actually do as much damage as great white the band did to new england, but i'm sure it's plenty scary."

um, yes. i'll post a picture soon.

actBlue

feeling political?
a little blue in the face?
inspired by hurricane ivan (whose wrath spared most of the "blue", i.e. democratic, counties in florida)?

www.actblue.com

they've raised nearly 1/2 a million dollars so far, for democratic candidates across the country. a good way to lend some helping dollars to all the candidates running for senate and house seats in other states.

and, you can do it from the comfort of your cozy chair, right there in front of your warm computer!

(here is an article from the boston globe if you want to learn more)

bringing home a baby bumblebee

i seem to be posting lots of links to things lately, but not really saying much in the meantime. i don't want to let my dear blogging-self down, so i'm having a moment of "forced introspection". actually, the day is winding down at work and i just need a break. it's been a hectic one - lots of little pieces to coordinate, you know? anyways, no big whup, except that i fear i'm getting ill again which made my day a bit... gray. okay, i know, writing about being sick is not very interesting, so don't worry - it's all i have to say on the subject. consider the topic addressed.

i spent the weekend camping with some friends, about 2 hours north of san francisco, and it was great. the weather was rockin', the food was rockin', we had plenty of booze to drink and games to play and a lovely coastal shore to hike along. we even even got to fall asleep to a little rainstorm (okay, we fell asleep to quiet, but were awoken by the rain, and then had to fall back asleep to it). even the rainstorm was rockin', because it sounded super cool as it pelted our tents. and also because it resulted in no one getting wet (aside from a pair of shoes). thanks to my roommate, who loaned us a plastic tarp (among other things), even our firewood was spared... which made the morning cup of tea even that much more tasty!

northern california is dramatically pretty. maybe not so much if you go inland, but if you stick to the shore lines, it is breath-taking. we had to roll along route 1 for a good hour or more to get to our campsite, and even though everyone got motion sick (minus the drivers), it was worth the view - giant rocks sharply protruding from the ocean, huge splashes & sprays of giant waves hitting the rocks, insane cliffs that shoot straight down for 50 or more feet, straight off the road's 1-foot shoulder (if that) and directly into the sea... oh and there were a few random cows and sheep grazing the coastline along the way. very interesting indeed.

we stopped for oysters on our way home, and had the pleasure of meeting a dog named chewbacca that liked to eat bees. being the bee-hater that i am, this is a dog for me. come 'ere, chewy! come 'ere!

scary! watch your bike!

oh man and we thought we were safe... if my precious bike gets stolen because of a frickin bic pen, i'm gonna be one seriously, furiously, pissed off mo-fo.

so a big f-u, u-lock.

read the AP article

watch the scary movie

and watch your bikes like hawks. or get a better lock.
it's a sad, sad day in big-city bicycle-safety land.

you should help me...

... get a free ipod!

i need five people to do it too or else i don't get mine. you have to sign up for something, but you can cancel most of them right away after you sign up. so do it. peer pressure.

btw - the only deals really worth signing up for are the sunday nytimes delivery (definitely good, as i already get one each week and i love it), or maybe stamps.com or netflix. please read the fine print on the other deals, so you don't get screwed - for instance, the coffee one has some sneaky bit about an "obligation" to buy more coffee at full price before you cancel... of course, if you drink a lot of coffee, then perhaps that isn't a bad deal. so whatever. it's your call. the long and short of it is that you could get a free ipod too.

(um. why do i feel like i'm doing some sort of modern day chain letter?)

send a million emails and you get a millions dollars back!

send out 50 dish towels and you get 50 dish towels back!

(is it "okay" to do this since it's backed by a company and not dependant on the mysterious magic of the chain letter? or am i still dirty? for falling prey?)

(don't answer that)

wild wild west

sorry for the lack of recent posts! i was in colorado over the weekend for my aunt's wedding, and it was an AWESOME trip. it's always great to see my cousins and family -- they are some of the coolest people in the world. i feel extrememly lucky to be part of such a great clan of people. now we added two more cousins to the mix, too: welcome kate and tyler! the more the merrier!

the weather in aspen Rawked with a capital R (except for morning rain the day of the actual wedding ceremony... but there is always drama when the Workingers are involved, so we may as well as had it with the weather, too). colorado is totally gorgeous this time of year - clear blue skies, warmth, sun, coolness at night, hints of fall in the air and the changing colors of the leaves. everything is just so dang vivid. unlike this foggy-ass town. SF. sigh. what to do with you.

glad to be back though. the trip wore me out. i missed my bed, and quiet moments of contemplation, and my bike. across the board, my family has a high level of stress and it's hard for me to deal with it sometimes. note to self, work on not getting so irritable with everyone. second note to self, margarittas and champagne definitely help. as do dogs. and hiking.

here comes the rain again

another hurricane is headed for florida! so scary! first charley, now frances. the poor residents haven't even cleaned up from last month's wrath and now they have to prepare for another, evacuate what is left of their homes, cross their fingers, and persevere. oy.

at least the weather in cali has been rockin'. it's been a full week and only ONE day of it was consumed by miserable fog. all the others have been clear, dry, sunny, and perfectly warm. hiphiphooray! there is hope for this miserable little city afterall!

next week though, i'm heading west. i mean east, to the wild wild west. to colorado. to a wedding. to family. to mountains. to fun! it will be a great break. i miss colorado. this time last year, i was packing up my bags to leave it. i was embarking on a few adventure. i was headed to the great unknown...

... and look where i landed! not too shabby, i have to say.

things are looking up!
i've been looking the landscape over, and it's covered with four-leaf clovers...

(that's a little musical reference for any of you theater geeks out there) (first person correctly tell me what show it's from wins my undying love and affection forever)(that's worth a lot of money, in case you don't have the blue book)
